10 Ways To Celebrate Earth Day

Celebrating the most critical resource of all Mother Earth in all of her glory. Earth Day is one day out of the year where the world can celebrate nature and reaffirm our promise to make the world a cleaner and safer place for animals and humankind. There are thousands of ways to celebrate Earth Day on April 22 or all year round. In this article 10 Ways To Celebrate Earth Day, you’ll find ten ways that you can pay tribute to our big blue planet.

Visit A National Park

One of the United States most valuable treasures was created in 1872 after President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act, making Yellowstone the world’s first national park. The purpose of the National Park system was to protect the natural resources for visitors in the present and the future. Our most beautiful landscapes like the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, and Yellowstone Park are for many U.S. citizens or travelers from around the world the first chance to see America as it was before the development of cities and farmlands.

If you haven’t had a chance to travel to at least one National Park, this is a must see to put on your bucket list. The joy of going on vacation to a National Park is to get in touch with nature and see animals that have long been lost due to environmental hazards or humans developing the land. Visiting the parks and paying the fees help to fund repairs, maintenance, habitat restorations and facilities.

Volunteer At A Beach Clean-up

Do you love going to the beach and notice trash or cigarette buds on the sand? Then grab some sunblock, gloves, and a trash bag and give back to Mother Earth and protect ocean creatures and birds by cleaning up waste. You can sign up for a local clean up or organize a beach clean up with friends or co-workers. This is a fun way to get the kids involved in protecting the environment and getting them involved in helping to keep the oceans free from trash and plastic.

Make the trash can up a game and an educational opportunity. Set a goal for the amount of trash you can clean up off the beach. When all the trash is collected, take a few items from the trash bag and explain why the trash can be dangerous for animals. Afterwards wash your hands and have some type of reward for the kids or play games on the beach.

Plant a Tree

Millions of trees are cut down each year all over the world including areas that are most at risk from climate change. You can help to reforest areas in need of rehabilitation by planting a tree or donating to a charity like The Canopy Project. The project locations are selected to have a positive impact on the environment and will benefit the people in the local communities.

Go Skygazing

Turn off the lights and head to the mountains or desert to view the light show in the sky. On Earth Day there are hundreds of sky gazing events all over the world at designated International Dark Sky Places all over the world. These locations is a program that encourages communities, parks, and protected areas to preserve and protect dark sites with education and lighting policies.

Several locations are in National Parks in the U.S. like Death Valley and Grand Canyon National Parks. But there are countless locations only a few hours drive from you. If you go to a skygazing event hosted by International Dark Sky Association, there will be plenty of telescopes and astronomers to ask questions and will help you locate constellations in the sky. Check out their website to see if there is a dark sky community or sanctuary near you.

Go To Earth Day Festival

Enjoy an Earth Day festival in your local town full of entertainments, speakers, music and activities for kids. Most festivals have eco-friendly, zero waste, and sustainable friendly foods, products, and information about environmental conservation and animal rescues.

This is a fun way to learn about how you can help to protect the planet with recycling, reducing your impact on the environment, and reuse.

Donate To An Environmental Charity

If you’re passionate about protecting the environment and want to make an impact now. You can donate to your favorite environmental charity. There are plenty to choose from so do your research. Some of my favorite charities include preserving Open Spaces, Marine Mammal Conservation, National Parks, and Shark Research

Go Camping

Looking for a reason to escape the city? Pack up your truck and hit the road to camp in the mountains or desert. There is plenty to do during the day such as hiking, bird watching, and learning about Native American history.  Close out the night with skygazing, telling ghost stories, and falling asleep to the sound of nature.

Go Bird Watching

Grab your binoculars and go bird watching. There are plenty of sites near you that you can take in the sights and sounds of birds. If you’re near the ocean or rivers there may even be a local preserve with resources to educate you on the local bird population to look for in your area.

Adopt An Endangered Animal

Of course, this is symbolic adoptions, so don’t expect to have your animal shipped to you by FedEx. One of the most well-known organizations is the World Wildlife Fund.

It’s simple, just make a donation to the organization and symbolically adopt an animal or sponsor a particular program. The funds go to support conservation of these endangered animals due to human-animal conflict or habit loss.

Earth Day Scavenger Hunt

Scavenger hunts aren’t just for kids. Adult scavenger hunts can be just as fun and can take place in or out of the office. Write clues and have participants look for trees, leaves, animals or capture a bird flying on camera. Enjoy some laughs and learn something new with family and friends.

Earth Day is just a once a year event but we should celebrate everyday. There are so many ways to enjoy the loveliness of Earth. Thank her for the gifts that she provides for us.
