How To Set Self-Care Goals

Get ready to plan the ultimate year of self-care with me! Happy new year, everyone! Let’s kick off 2022 to love ourselves and take care of ourselves every day. In this article, “How To Set Self-care Goals,” I’ll share my secrets to maintaining my self-care schedule without going broke and how to create space for yourself in this busy world.

This is the perfect time to declare that you are a priority. You’re not going to cheat yourself from being the best and healthiest version of yourself. Let’s get started!

Why Is Self-Care Important To Me?

Before we get started, I have to quickly tell you why self-care goals are important. You see, I’m one of those mythical creatures in the world that absorb the energy of people around them. It can be a blessing because I’m sensitive to the emotions of others, but it can also be a curse and overwhelming when a crowd of people surrounds me.

A few years ago, I was working too much, listening to too many people’s problems, ending a relationship, having problems at work, my parents’ divorce, etc., and I started getting sick. Physically sick and emotionally tired. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I learned that my natural tendency to “feel” the world instead of walking through it is known as an empathetic person, and I had to learn how to manage my “superpower” so it doesn’t destroy me. So for me, self-care is survival so I can function at a decent level in the world instead of crawling under a table with a blanket.

You have to know the reason why self-care is so important to you. This usually can be identified by the way that you feel. Are you fed up with being last on everyone’s list, including your own?  How would you feel if you took better care of yourself by slowing down, eating healthy, delicious food, and treating yourself like a Queen? Take out your journal and write down your reasons for why self-care is important to you.

What Is Your Self-Care Theme?

With any goal, you have to have intention. With self-care goals, it’s important to set the right tone for the new year. Your intention can be one word that invokes a feeling that resonates with you. It’s similar to having anthems or theme songs for yourself. My theme is “Savage” by Megan Thee Stallion. Why? Because the song is dope and makes me feel like a badass, and I will savagely do whatever it takes to make sure I have my me time!

What Am I Missing In My Self-Care Routine?

We finally come to the part where we evaluate what self-care regimens are missing from our lives and how they can help us to empower ourselves.  Write down all the things you would like to do as part of your skincare routine. Don’t be afraid to be extravagant because you deserve to have everything you want in life.

The self-care that I miss the most is when I used to have one hour deep massages twice a month. I greatly benefited from my masseuse and chiropractor’s expert hands, who helped reduce hip and back pain from an accident several years prior.

Hold on to your self-care wishlist as we create a plan of action.

Plan Of Action- How To Execute Your Goals

Yearly Goal For Self-Care

It’s time to set a yearly self-care goal that you are completely away from all responsibilities and obligations. For example, how many days off would you like to take off this year for personal self-care days and vacations? There’s no right or wrong answer to this, but it’s important to set a goal and then figure out how to make it happen.

Every year my goal is to take two weeks off in December to enjoy Christmas and New Year and to set goals for the upcoming year. I also take a few days off around Easter and my birthday to allow myself to enjoy the festivities. It’s up to you when and how often you want to make time for yourself. Make sure that you do it and follow through.

Schedule

The only sure way to make self-care is to make it a priority on your calendar. If you can make a recurring appointment with your manicurist, hair stylist, and anyone else that’s part of your glam team, then do it! Block this time out on your calendar and ruthlessly protect these sacred hours of nurturing and rejuvenating your spirit.

Request Time Off

Don’t be afraid to request time off from work because you earned it! A great way to start the new year is to schedule time off 4-6 months in advance. It gives you something to focus on and work towards and gives your boss plenty of notice that you’ll be on vacation. Also, sprinkle in a few mental health days when you’re frazzled and overworked now and then.

Self-care days and personal time off reduce burnout in employees and give them a work-life balance.

Self-Care Money Stash

I’m in the process of setting up a bank account specifically for self-care because I’ll be able to save for the bigger self-care splurges like a day spa, high tea or a weekend trip to Napa Valley. I don’t suggest putting yourself in debt for self-care days and treatments on your credit card. Play it smart and make room in your budget to accommodate your self-care lifestyle. This might mean sacrificing a few online subscriptions or dining out less but you will thank me for suggesting this in the long run.

Be Resourceful

When you’re a self-care junky like me,  you have to be crafty to have the best that life has to offer. This might mean finding Groupon deals, travel specials, loyalty rewards, and memberships to be able to enjoy new experiences, but the research will be worth it and your bank account will thank you.

Don’t be afraid to ask or suggest self-care gift ideas to family and friends. There is nothing wrong with sharing your thoughts with your loved ones regarding the gift that will bring you joy. You can drop hints or create an Amazon wishlist for a more subtle approach.
