13 Fun Ways To Beat The Heat
Girl, it’s hot outside! That’s usually the first thing I say on the 1st of July. Temperatures are rising, and it may be challenging to cool down during summer. In this article, “Fun Ways To Beat The Heat,” I’ll share some of my favorite activities to do during the summer to stay cool and won’t cost you more than a few bucks. The most important lesson from this article is to be creative and find ways to have fun. Summer is one of my favorite times of year because of the warm temperatures and for the extra hour of sunlight to enjoy outdoor activities.
Go To The Beach
You can’t go wrong with having a day at the beach. Temperatures tend to be 5-10 degrees cooler at the coast; if the sand is hot, the water will provide quick cooling relief. So grab your flip-flops, swimsuit, towel, and sunblock, and hit the shore for some summertime fun! If you have the luxury of working from home, why not schedule a day to work at the beach! While you’re there bring a few beach sports games with you like volleyball, frisbee, or sand buckets to build a sand castle.
Swimming
Splish splash and take a deep in the nice cool swimming pool. Swimming is a wonderful full-body workout; it is up to you if you want to lounge around in the pool on a floaty.
Swimming pools are fun on your own, but why not throw a pool party with a few friends. You can keep the expenses low by having a potluck. You provide the main dish like burgers, pizza, salad, and your friends can bring beverages, dessert, or sides.
Kayak or Paddle Boarding
Okay, this might not be for everyone, but kayaking or paddle boarding is a fun way to beat the heat and get plenty of exercise. Not sure if you want to take on kayaking alone? You can go tandem kayak and join a kayaking group to learn the best techniques and find the best location to snorkel and observe sea life.
Evening and Early Morning Hikes
An evening hike is a great way to avoid the extreme heat of summer. There are some amazing and safe trails that you can use at dusk and night. I highly suggest using apps like Alltrails to identify trails and research to ensure that paths are well marked and the equipment you need to stay safe.
One of my favorite trails in San Diego is Cowles Mountain. This is a popular trail all year long and is one of the best places to night hike on a high-traffic trail. I feel comfortable enough to hike on this trail alone at night because there is plenty of foot traffic, and when I head back to my car, I make sure to leave the trail with a group of people.
I wouldn’t recommend this if you aren’t familiar with this trail, and it’s always a good practice to tell a family or friends where you’re going to hike and when you are heading home. This will help alert your family to contact authorities that you may be hurt on the trail.
Ice Bath
Okay, I have to admit that I won’t be trying this one, but if you’re brave, then taking a dip in an ice bath can be just what you need. Some ice bath benefits include: decreased inflammation, reduced core temperature, and eased sore muscles.
Make Homemade Ice Cream
There is nothing more nostalgic than sitting on your front porch with a ziplock bag full of cream, rock ice, ice cubes, and a splash of vanilla and shaking your bag, eagerly waiting for the delicious taste of homemade ice cream.
Picnic Under A Shade Tree
One of my favorite childhood memories was having summer picnics under my best friend’s tree. We would pack a paper bag full of our favorite treats and bring them to share on a blanket under a large shade tree. Why not recreate your own picnic at a local park or even in your backyard. Another idea is to go to a local summer music concert or movie showing at a park and bring a picnic dinner of your favorite summer fruits, vegetables, and grilled shrimp or chicken. Delicious!
Water Balloon Fight
Instant fun times and silly memories are always at hand when you have a water balloon fight. So go to your local Walmart, stock up on water balloons, and invite your family and friends for water balloon wars.
Skygazing
Stare up at faraway galaxies and sky gaze. You don’t need special equipment like a telescope to view the stars. You can google “best sky-gazing locations” in your area and come up with a list of the best locations near you. You can also visit an observatory or find a local sky-gazing event.
Whale Watching Trip
Sign up for a whale-watching trip to take in the beauty of nature’s majestic creatures of the deep. You can find great deals on Groupon or find summer rates online. Trips usually last a few hours and are relatively inexpensive. Tip: Make sure to stock up on seasick medicine even if you normally don’t get sick.
Dinner Cruise
Another fun and romantic way to beat the heat is to go on a dinner cruise. There are some great deals and festive themes, delicious food, and great music during the summer.
Buy Black Out Curtains
Invest in black out curtains that will keep the hot summer rays at bay. You can find some great buys on Amazon or Walmart. When your looking for curtains think Vegas quality curtains.
Go To The Movies
Summer is a great time to catch a movie at the movie theatre. The air conditioner is typically on full blast, and you can also watch a great movie and eat delicious popcorn.
