What To Wear To Church During The Summer
Summer is a great time to add some fun into your church fashion. In this article, What To Wear To Church During The Summer, you’ll learn my tips for making your summer outfits appropriate for church. I love summer fashion because its the time of year when you whip out your most feminine dresses and skirts and get adventurous with print dresses and bright colors. Even though going to church on Sunday isn’t like it use to be with social distancing regulations, you can find an outfit that makes you feel good. I’m also sharing some of my own personal fashion standards for church appropriate clothes. The main purpose of dressing up on Sunday is to give honor to God and celebrate all that He has done for me.
Church Summer Fashion Guidelines
I created these fashion guidelines for approving or disapproving outfits to wear to church on Sunday. Sunday is the day when I wear my most feminine dresses and look suitable for the Lord. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve been more conservative about the outfits that I wear and more mindful of having respect and reverence for God. This respect also extends to wearing outfits that keep me for unintentional distracting my priest or deacon. I like to put myself in other people’s shoes, and one day I thought of my priest and deacon. They’re able to see everyone in the church from the altar. It’s easy to be distracted if someone is fidgeting with their outfit or showing a little more leg then they should. I feel I have to make things easier for them by being classy fashionista at church.
Here are a few questions I ask myself when I’m looking at myself in the mirror:
Can I see through this dress when I’m in the light?
Can you see my underwear, shapewear, breast or butt too much?
Can I comfortably sit down and have enough fabric to cover my leg to an inch above the knee?
Is the fabric too clingy or shear?
Am I going to be too hot or cold in this outfit?
If my answer is no one of those, I won’t wear that outfit.

Maxi Dresses
If you’re not comfortable showing your legs, a maxi dress is a perfect alternative. Maxi dress is a full-length dress that is typically made of lightweight fabric. If your planning on wearing a maxi dress to church, check to make sure that it’s not see-through. Stand in a well-lit area and look in the mirror. Stand with one leg forward and the other behind. Can you see your legs through the fabric? Does the fabric cling too tight to your body or show too much cleavage? A quick fix to these problems is to wear a slip or shapewear that matches your dress or skin tone. You can also wear a light sweater or wrap to cover your shoulders or back if your maxi dress has spaghetti straps.
Swing Dress
I love me a swing dress! They’re so easy to wear and light. These dresses usually are cut at the perfect length and allow the dress to swing away from the body, hence the name swing dress. Midi swing dresses are so feminine and flattering on all body types. I’ve seen some adorable midi dresses in floral prints and short sleeves. What a perfect dress to wear on a hot day!
Wrap Dresses
Wrap dresses are cut closer to the body, and if you’re not careful, you might show off too much skin. My rule of thumb is shoulders always covered and 1 inch above the knee for my dress length. The tricky part to wrap dresses is that if you don’t tie it properly you can easily have a wardrobe malfunction. It’s important to wear a slip or some type of shapewear underneath so your dress looks smooth and keep you covered up if the wind blows blows. My favorite shapewear is Skims because it gives you great coverage and has a light breathable fabric.
Sundresses
Sundresses are a popular style during the summer months but tend to have spaghetti straps. An easy fix is to wear a shirt underneath or wear a light cardigan to cover your shoulders. Floral prints are big right now and so simple to put a simple outfit together.
Skirts
Skirts are another excellent option for the church as long as the length is appropriate. I love the way pencil skirts look and show off curves. To keep cool, a knee-length flowy skirt Pair your skirt with a cardigan or light blouse.
Long flow skirts are a great option if you don’t feel comfortable showing your legs. Pair this with a bodysuit or a tank top, and you’re ready to go.
Light Cardigan Or A Shawl
Cardigans are my go-to look for a church and can be useful if you have a dress that you love but show too much shoulders or cleavage. The key is to find a lightweight cardigan that lets in plenty of cool air. I buy most of my cardigans from The Loft or Ross.
Another option is a shawl to cover your shoulders during Sunday service. I used to rock a shawl when it was sweltering, and I didn’t want to wear a cardigan. Pick a shawl that is lightweight but isn’t ultimately see-through.
Shoes
I love showing off my feet during the summer, and wearing sandals is a must. Have fun with colors and prints. My favorite styles are flats, wedges, and stiletto sandals. Find a bright and playful nail polish color and give those feet some love!
Facial Coverings
Okay, I never thought I would have to think about adding a facial mask to my summer wardrobe, but we are living in crazy times right now. I’m still trying to figure out a simple mask that I can breathe through and matches my dresses. Black seems like the best option because black matches everything, but I worry that a black mask will be hot and uncomfortable. If you have any suggestions on fashionable facial mask, leave a comment below.
