Self-care is often portrayed as being selfish. However, it couldn’t be further from the truth. Let’s break the chains of being a slave to everyone else, and crown yourself as a king or queen of self-love.
People complain about not having time for themselves. Are you one of them? Are you making your mental, physical, and emotional health a priority?
Do You Love Yourself?
2019 I was physically and mentally at my worst. I gained 20 pounds in eight months and felt and looked horrible.
I grew tired of feeling like crap and decided to go to the gym.
Here’s the problem….
I didn’t want to go to the gym and face the extra roll of fat on my thighs. I wanted to stay home and watch I Love Lucy episodes and eat chocolate cake.
A voice from the past entered my head. In 2012 I was getting fitness tips from a world class bodybuilder. She just happened to me one of my clients.
She said “Do you love yourself enough to keep doing this?”
At that time I was getting through a break up and I didn’t care anymore. I responded
“No, I don’t care about myself right now. I’m done.”
It took me eight years to realize that I needed to love myself enough and take care of my body.
I decided to make myself a priority.
Get Your Mind Right
First you have to get your mindset right. You will need to do some soul searching to find out why you don’t value yourself.
Should you place your boyfriend/partners or children’s needs over your own ?
The answer is no. You will burn yourself out and probably resent them for it. You’ll need to train yourself to put yourself first.
You’ll actually be doing them a favor.Who cares if people get upset or disappointed. It’s not your problem!
Schedule Me Time
Yes, I said pull out a calendar or your phone and actually schedule time for yourself. Here is another article on daily self-care routine by blogger Afa Muche that you can incorporate into your life, especially during quarantine.
Grab a piece of paper and make a list of 20 activities that makes you feel joy and relaxed. After you write them down, make a commitment to schedule one activity each week. Here is a list of the top 10 activities that I like to do to relax.
- Sit in silence for an hour
- Take a bath
- Go get a manicure/pedicure
- Get a facial
- Get a massage
- Go to the gym
- Go for a hike
- Have lunch with a friend or alone
- Take myself to dinner
- Go for a walk on the beach
Set A Self-Care Goal
Each year plan to schedule a set amount of self-care days/moments for yourself. If you can commit do doing one self-care moment each month then your well on your way.
