Grounding Techniques To Bring Your Energy Into Balance
Scattered brained, frazzled, and distressing thoughts are some of the symptoms of stress that many of us face in our daily life. Grounding techniques can help you refocus your thoughts and help you focus on the present moment, and bring your energy into balance.
In this article, “Grounding Techniques To Bring Your Energy Into Balance,” I share some grounding techniques that will soothe your anxious mind. If you’re an empathetic person, these grounding techniques can be a saving grace in a world full of distractions and sensory overload. Try one or two of the techniques that resonate with you to help soothe your anxiety or stress.
Living Out Of Balance As A Highly Sensitive Person
“Everything feels off; I feel like I’m going to explode,” I lamented to my therapist. Looking at me on the outside, I looked calm, as if I had it together. However, inside I felt like I was losing control. I felt overwhelmed, frustrated, and all I wanted to do was be alone.
Something was energetically off in me, and I wanted a therapist to understand what was wrong with me. After some research, I found a therapist who evaluated me through our conversations and testing, discovered that I am highly sensitive.
HSP is a personality trait that a person has a sensitive nervous system and is deeply affected by their environment.
According to Dr. Elaine Aron, top expert of a highly sensitive person, states that “15-20% of the population are HSP”. After reading Dr. Aron’s book “The Highly Sensitive Person: How To Thrive When The World Overwhelms You,” I discovered that there was nothing wrong with me! My nervous system processes the environment differently than others.
As an empathic person, I have the ability to pick up another person’s emotional energy and know if a person is sad, angry, or in a good place. This can be a gift when working with children or caretaking others, but it can also be a curse when you pick up multiple people’s energy, and you can’t distinguish if it’s your own thoughts or feelings or someone else.
Discovering Ourselves
I completed the Myers-Briggs personality assessment and discovered that I have a personality type that only 3% of the population have! This discovery helped me understand why I had difficulty connecting with other kids in school and why I was constantly distracted and felt overwhelmed in crowded places.
With a newfound understanding of myself, I’ve learned several techniques to help ground my energy. Here are a few of my favorite grounding techniques.
Spend Time In Nature
Be one with nature and take a walk amongst the trees and fresh air. Connecting with Mother Earth is the easiest way to center your energy. You can take off your shoes and stand on grass or dirt or take a walk barefoot on the beach. If you’re uncomfortable walking barefoot you can ground yourself by holding a small rock in your hand or standing in nature and breathing deeply.
Grounding Object
You can use a grounding object like a rock, crystal or by putting your feet on the earth. For some, a grounding object can be a blanket or a favorite sweater that soothes them. Using a weighted blanket is an easy way to make you feel more grounded while you sleep. Weighted gravity blankets can weigh up to 15 pounds and help ease anxiety and insomnia. It is suggested that a customer should choose a blanket about 10% of their body weight. Weighted gravity blankets can be found on Amazon.
Do Something You Love
Create a list of 30 activities that you enjoy doing on hand when you’re feeling down or overwhelmed. Activities that I have on my list are reading a book, going on a hike, spending time alone, journaling, painting, or going out for a drink with a friend. Find activities that are uplifting and bring you peace of mind.
Spend Time Alone
Scheduling time to reflect and be by yourself is one of the most important things you can do to increase your creativity and improve your self-care. Give yourself permission to pamper yourself by giving yourself a little tender loving care. Use this time to only do things that feel good to you like taking a hot bath or slowly savoring a hot cup of tea in the morning. Slowing down and being mindful and in the moment will help to restore your nervous system to a calm state.
Meditate
Meditation can seem like a daunting task, but meditation is simple as long as you don’t overcomplicate it. Find a comfortable and quiet spot to sit still. Know that your mind will race and remember to breathe through your racing thoughts. Start with a short meditation session of 2-5 minutes, then increase the duration over time.
My favorite meditation tool is the Calm app. Here are tons of guided meditation, music, and less guided meditation with a timer. Dr. Deepak Chopra app Chopra Meditation and Well-Being app is also a great way for beginners to learn the art of meditation.
Journal
Journaling daily is a wonderful way to express your inner thoughts and creativity with pen and paper. Journals can be used to express gratitude, brainstorm, songs, poems, and sketching. Journal prompts are also a great way to learn more about yourself. You can find tons of journal prompts on Pinterest or purchase a journal prompt book on Amazon.
Take A Break From The News & Social Media
Reports on the news or social media can have a draining effect on emotional and mental health. Take a break from social media and watch the news less often. Limit viewing the news to a few minutes a day and refrain from watching the news before bed.
