10 Tips For After Workout Skincare

A good workout can make you feel refreshed and energized but  can also leave your skin looking dull or greasy. That’s why it’s important to have an after-workout skincare routine to help your skin bounce back after a workout.

In this blog, we will discuss 10 Tips For After Workout Skincare, which will help you maintain healthy, glowing skin even after an intense workout.

Take A Shower As Soon As Your Done Working Out

Hit the showers! Wash off the sweat and grime from your workout immediately after your workout. If you’re unable to get to the showers or have another place to go, change your clothes and wipe off with body wipes and feminine wipes for private area. Dr. Karen Davis, a skincare expert emphasizes the importance of maintaining your hygiene after exercising. Dr. Davis advises to shower and change out of sweaty clothes to reduce the risk of bacteria growth and clogged pores. Another tip is to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer before leaving the gym and avoid touching your face with unwashed hands.

Cleanse Your Skin

One of the most important steps to take after a workout is to cleanse your skin. Sweat, dirt, and oil can accumulate on your skin during exercise, and if your skincare is not addressed, can clog your pores and cause breakouts. According to Dr. Zenovia Gabriel, a board-certified dermatologist, “cleansing your skin after a workout helps remove the dirt, bacteria, and sweat that can clog pores, leading to inflammation and acne.”

To cleanse your skin, use a gentle cleanser that won’t strip away your skin’s natural oils. “Avoid harsh, sulfated detergents that can be drying and irritating,” says Dr. Gabriel. Instead, use a gentle cleanser that contains hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin. One of my favorite cleansers is Murad Vitamin C wash and Cerave Hydrating cleanser.

Use a toner

After washing your skin, use a toner to restore your skin’s pH balance. Toners can help remove leftover dirt and oil that your cleanser may have missed. “A toner can help remove any remaining impurities, and its pH-balancing properties can help improve skin texture and tone.” said Dr. Sapna Palep, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Spring Street Dermatology.

When choosing a toner, look for an alcohol-free toner that contains hydrating ingredients like aloe vera or chamomile and if you have acne prone skin to use a toner with salicylic acid or glycolic acid.

Apply a Serum

After applying your toner, it’s time to apply a serum. Serums are lightweight, highly concentrated formulas that can deliver active ingredients to your skin. Dr. Heather Woolery-Lloyd, a board-certified dermatologist states, “serums can help improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation, while also providing antioxidants to help protect your skin from environmental damage.”

When looking for a serum to add to your skincare routine, look for serums that contain antioxidants like vitamin C, E, or ferulic acid. These ingredients can help combat the free radical damage caused by exercising. Dr. Woolery-Lloyd recommends “using a serum that has vitamin C as it helps brighten and even out skin tone.”

Use an Eye Cream

Your eyes are one of the most delicate areas on your face, and they can be easily irritated by sweat and rubbing during exercise. That’s why it’s so important to use eye cream after a workout.  Eye creams help to reduce the appearance of dark circles, fine wrinkles around the eyes, puffiness, and improve skin elasticity.

Look for an eye cream that contains ingredients like caffeine or green tea extract, which can help reduce puffiness.

Apply a Moisturizer

After a workout, your skin may feel tight and dry, which is why it’s essential to apply a moisturizer. Look for a lightweight moisturizer that won’t clog your pores. “Choose a moisturizer that contains ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin, which can help to hydrate the skin without causing breakouts,” suggests Dr. Garshick. One of my favorite moisturizers is The Ordinary Moisturizing Lotion.

Taking care of your skin after working out is critical to maintain healthy and radiant skin. A consistent skincare routine for your specific needs will have the best results. Seek the advice of a dermatologist for your particular skin care needs so your skin can keep its healthy, youthful, glow.

Skip Heavy Makeup

You might want to think twice before wearing makeup to the gym and even immediately after the gym. Makeup artist Lisa Evans advises against applying heavy makeup immediately after exercising. Evans suggests opting for a tinted moisturizer even out your complexion while allowing your skin to breathe. Heavy foundations can trap sweat and impurities, leading to breakouts.

Routine Facials

Adding routine facials into your skincare maintenance regime will help to make your complexion Esthetician Sarah Collins recommends using a face mask after your workout to give your skin an extra boost of hydration and radiance. Look for masks containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or aloe vera to replenish moisture and revive your complexion.

Hydrate

Drinking an adequate amount of water helps keep your skin hydrated from within promoting a healthy glowing skin. Well-hydrated skin is less prone to issues like flakiness, itchiness, and dullness. It is recommended that we drink eight glasses of water a day.

Exfoliate

Exfoliation is key to achieving a fresh and glowing complexion. After cleansing, incorporate a gentle exfoliator into your routine to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores. This step helps to prevent post-workout breakouts and allows your skin to absorb products more effectively. Dr. Sarah Collins, recommends using an exfoliator with natural ingredients like fruit enzymes or gentle acids for a gentle yet effective exfoliation.
